If you want acorns with caps for scientific study and not for growing , see my 20+ SPECIES OF OAK ACORNS FOR BOTANICAL STUDY / COLLECTIONS ( when listed ) . You are bidding on 12 CHESTNUT OAK ACORNS - Quercus prinus . This is sometimes called rock oak, basket oak or tanbark oak and is commonly found on dry, infertile soils and rocky ridges but reaches best growth on rich well-drained soils along streams. Good acorn crops on this medium-sized, long-lived tree are infrequent, but the sweet nuts are eaten by wildlife when available. Mature Size: 50 to 70 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet in diameter. Leaves : Alternate, simple, 4 to 8 inches long, roughly oval but often wider near the tip, edges with large rounded teeth. Fruit : Shiny, oval acorn, 1 to 1½ inches long, maturing in one season; cap scaly, teacup-like, with thin edges, separating from acorn when mature. Zone: 4 to 8 Height: 50.00 to 70.00 feet Spread: 50.00 to 70.00 feet Medicinal use : Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarrhea, dysentery etc. Edible parts : Seed - raw or cooked. Somewhat sweet according to some reports whilst another says that it contains bitter tannin. The seed is quite large, up to 4 cm long and 25 mm wide. It can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc or mixed with cereals for making bread. Other uses: A mulch of the leaves repels slugs, grubs etc, though fresh leaves should not be used as these can inhibit plant growth. The seed cups are used as buttons. The bark is a commercial source of tannin. On a 10% moisture basis, the bark contains 9.7% tannin. Tannin is also found in the leaves and wood. A red dye is obtained from the bark. Tan-colored according to another report. Wood - close-grained, heavy, hard, rather tough, strong, durable in contact with the soil. It weighs 47 lb per cubic foot. Used commercially like Q. alba, it is used for furniture, cabinet making, interior finishes, fence posts and fuel.
