Description: I have here for sale a TWO VOLUME SET of books entitled ADVENTURES DURING A JOURNEY OVERLAND TO INDIA, By Way of Egypt, Syria, and the Holy Land by MAJOR SKINNER Second Edition in Two Volumes VOLS I & II published by Richard Bentley, London, in 1837. First published in 1836. The narrative of this journey begins in the Port of Marseilles in 1832 at the beginning of a journey through Egypt, the Holy Land, Syria, Mesopotamia (Baghdad, Babylon and Basrah), Persia, down the Arabian Gulf, with a visit to Muscat, and from there on to India. Volume I contains a full-page b/w portrait of Major Skinner on the frontispiece, and Volume II contains a full-page engraving of The Lake of Tiberias on the frontispiece.Black calf leather boards with a decorative gilt border design. Front boards detached. Four raised bands with gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spines. Small bit of leather missing at the top of volume I and there are minor tears to the bottom of the spines. Marbled endpapers with 3 bookplates on the front endpapers. Gift inscription on prelim of Volume I. Rear hinges slightly cracked but all pages are firm and the books are in very good overall condition. Vol I: xi, 324 pages.
