John Thompson was one of seven children born into slavery on the Wagar plantation in Maryland in 1812. He remained on this plantation until 1823, when he was sold to various other plantations throughout the south. Eventually, Thompson made a successful escape to the North, where he settled in Pennsylvania and eventually married and found work. Thompson would eventually join a whaling vessel to avoid arrest. This autobiography provides a very rare look into the perspective of a former slave. The history of this volume would provide an excellent opportunity for restoration or rebinding, if desired.
