Description: Geological Map of the State of Michigan, showing the Counties (colored) in which are Five Hundred Thousand Acres of the Land Grant of the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad Company by Asher & Adams, Eng’d for the Land Dept of the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw R.R. Co., New York: Asher & Adams, 1874 Hand colored geological map with counties associated with the railroad land grant (Saginaw, Bay, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Missaukee, Oscoda, Crawford, Kalkaska, Montmorency, Otsego, Cheboygan, Emmit, and possibly Antrim and Charlevoix) identified by boldly dashed boundaries (counter to the title, geological formations are colored, not the counties) on sheet with centerfold. The J L & S RR is shown extending as far north as Gaylord in Otsego County with planned extensions to Mackinaw City and Cheboygan indicated by dashed lines. Several connecting RR lines are prominently shown converging at Jackson with many other less-pronounced RR lines crisscrossing the state. At Bay City, the “Great Summer Route to Mackinaw” steamboat route in Lake Huron connects with the line. The map was presumably issued separately for promotional purposes and does not appear to be associated with any other publication. Map size: 20 3/4 x 14 1/4 inches (neatlines) on larger sheet. Map scale not given. For purposes of the map, Asher & Adams adopted Alexander Winchell’s 1865 “Geological Map of Michigan” as a base. WorldCat locates only one other copy at the Library of Michigan. Not in Karpinski or Marcou & Marcou. Rare. Condition: Due to fragility, the map has been archivally mounted to Japanese tissue for long-term preservation. This process, unfortunately, has resulted in some fading to the original colors. Map has some edge tearing and chipping mainly limited to the margins with a triangular piece patched at the right center edge restoring a short segment of neatline.
