Lady Florence Bell Lady Bell (1851 -1930) Photo taken in 1911 Lady Florence Bell was the second wife of the Middlesbrough industrialist Sir Hugh Bell. She wrote the pioneering volume "At the Works- a study of a Manufacturing Town" published by Edward Arnold in 1907. She dedicated the book to Charles Booth " of wise and sympathetic counsel". Florence also was the author of more than twenty plays; including comedies melodrama, and moral tales as well as translations of a number of contemporary French dramas.Eight of her plays were performed at theatres in London with Sybil Thorndike in the lead and her also producing three of them in the 1920s. Three of the plays were "The Way the Money Goes", produced in London in 1910, "John Bull's Market" 1923, and "Alan's Wife" (1893) staged at the Independent Theatre in the Strand, London. George Bernard Shaw was among those who were impressed by the powerful realism of the play. She also wrote a number of dramatic sketches including play called farmer Bates and His Wife performed in aid of the war effort at the Grand Opera House, Middlesbrough. She also edited and published the letters of her famous step-daughter the arab scholar, historian, explorer and diplomat Gertude Bell. The letters are digitised and available on the Newcastle University website and stored in the Robinson Library Special Collections.
