The 1906 Navy & Army is a particularly scarce illustrated publication. It covers an interesting moment in time after the end of the Boer War and before the first world war. Without these major events to focus on there are interesting and informative articles and images of life in the Navy and Army covering Technical, Scientific and Social Development. First published in 1895 by George Newnes on glossy paper, The Navy and Army Illustrated described itself as 'A Magazine Descriptive and Illustrative of Everyday Life in the Defensive Services of the British Empire'. The first series, published between 1895 and 1903, was edited by Commander Charles Napier Robinson. Originally published fortnightly and priced at 6d, its publication was later increased to weekly. From 1903 it amalgamated with The King, another magazine from the same publishing house and was renamed. This was not successful, and sales were very poor, possibly due to the publishers aiming at the widest possible readership with a strange mix of news, fashion, theatre, travel, the British Empire and military articles & pictures on glossy paper. Its strapline at the time was: A weekly illustrated journal for society, the salon and the services. Though short lived, it excelled in each of these areas. It quickly faded away from the news stands. The King and His Navy and Army following which much of the military content was dropped and by 1905 interest in the magazine was fading. Previously, during the Boer War, interest in the armed forces reached a peak with the officers and commanders achieving what we nowadays call celebrity status. In fact a publication of this era was titled "Celebrities of the Army". However, in the early part of the century interest was no longer focused on military matters due to the end of major military conflicts. Against this background the bold decision was made to relaunch the magazine in 1906 when it was republished in a new series and reverted to its original title of The Navy & Army with a smaller format. Not surprisingly the magazine did not attract as much attention as before and quickly came to an end midway through its first series. As a result this item is a rare find.
