Produced on heavy slick paper they were meant to be removed for display is it said on the bottom "Cut this out and frame:. The example has a great presention quality with just minor staining on the edges. Graded AUTH by BGS.In January 1915, Baseball Magazine rewarded its readers by including a special art print of Christy Mathewson that was designed to be removed for display. The same premium was later offered in a special "Park Edition" of Baseball Magazine that was exclusively produced for sale at major league ballparks in April of that same year. One month later, in its February issue, Baseball Magazine offered another premium of Honus Wagner. Both premiums featured the artwork of noted illustrator J. F. Kernan. The premiums, which are produced on a special heavy, slick, art-print stock (which is very different and far superior to the stock of the pages of Baseball Magazine), identify each player in print along the base. A 1914 Baseball Magazine copyright appears on the lower left corner. Interesting note: Artist J. F. Kernan was an extremely prominent illustrator, and he produced cover paintings for the Saturday Evening Post and many other prestigious magazines. He obviously had a special connection to Baseball Magazine as in addition to this premium, numerous early Baseball Magazine covers were also painted by Kernan. The “1915 Baseball Magazine Premium” was included in the Sports Collectors Digest (SCD) which was published starting in 1981. The publication included the Mathewson premium in its Annual Price Guide. The Wagner example it appears had had not yet been identified as it was excluded from the publication. During this period the Baseball Magazine was a popular, attractive publication with colorful, graphic covers.
