Description: ··· IMAGE ··· This poster represents a little piece of Niagara Falls history! The Great Gorge Trip was a waterside rail line that opened in 1895. It provided stunning close-up views of the falls and the whirlpool rapids to approximately 500,000 passengers each year. In the summer, open-sided trolleys were used. Spotlights were added in 1914 to allow night time views of the Whirlpool Rapids. Accidents plagued the attraction, with rock slides, avalanches, brake failures, and erosion causing major damage to the line and sometimes injury and death to riders. In 1935, 200 feet of track were destroyed by a 5,000 ton rock slide.
