Colonel Edward J. Murray (above) of Palo Alto, California, is held in technical arrest in San Francisco. Customs Collector Paul Leake said, on orders from Colonel Douglas MacArthur following seizure of more than $200,000 worth of Japanese diamonds of U.S. Customs officials. An army colonel with an excellent record in the Pacific campaigns and Japanese occupation was under arrest Thursday while customs officials and the army pursued investigations resulting from seizure of $210,000 in Japanese diamonds. The jewels, customs officials said, were found on the officer's person and in his safe deposit box. Colonel Edward J. Murray calmly said Thursday he had acquired about $200,000 in Japanese diamonds but declined to say how. Held under technical arrest at Fort Mason here, pending his return to Tokyo to face possible charges, the 55-year-old, much-decorated officer said.Photo measures 7.25 x 10inches.
