Obverse: Bust left, wearing camauro, mozzetta, and stole; Reverse: Personification of the Church standing facing, head left, holding open book and with growing plant in hand; in background to left, mother with three children; to right, two forgers at anvil. Edge: Plain. Extremely lustrous, with a charming iridescence throughout mostly comprised of cobalt, magenta, and sea foam green; a few light hairlines are noted for completeness.Mater et magistra, referring to the church as mother and teacher, was an encyclical written by John XXIII on the topic "Christianity and Social Progress." By in large, a more progressive approach to the changing times in the church and in the world, this encyclical touched upon the church's intervention at times in matters such as health care, education, and housing.
