Noted film director Robert Altman ("M*A*S*H," "Nashville") directs "2 by South," two one-act plays by playwright Frank South produced by ABC Video Enterprises for ARTS, the cable television service devoted to the performing and visual arts. The two plays, "Precious Blood" and "Rattlesnake in a Cooler," were recently produced Off-Broadway at the St. Clements theatre and directed by Altman in his New York debut as a stage director. Altman is using the newly developed Panaflex video camera which uses lenses and mountings similar to the Panaflex film camera, offering a cinematographic flexibility never before available in video production. "2 by South" marks the first time this camera has been used for an actual dramatic production. Commenting on this project with ARTS, Mr. Altman said, "It was always my contention while directing "2 by South" Off-Broadway that there was a unique feeling about these two plays which could not be conveyed on the stage or even in film as well as it could in a medium like television. I believe a new style is evolving in the dramatic arts, a style calling for an even greater intimacy and contact between audience and performer than is possible in the theatre or in movies. Such a style may well find its ultimate expression in cable television."
