As a child Ialways had a fascination with antiquesand automobiles. Over the years thatinterest has resulted in a collection ofantique cars acquired at a time whenthe better vehicles were affordable. The Indian Ace pictured on the coveris one of these chance instances thattransformed the car collector into amotorcycle collector.Through the years I have had thegood fortune to have the friendship ofa former well known motorcycle racerand inventor. In the midst of one ofour frequent conversations, he men-tioned that as a child growing up inCanada, he had had a prized posses-sion: an Indian Four that afforded himmany hours of pleasure. It was decidedthat to help him discover his “ fountainof youth,” we needed to find for himthe bike of his youth. It astounds me how one's life canbecome excessively complicated due toignorance of a subject in which onebecomes involved. Not knowing whereto begin in this quest, 1 asked a fewfriends, who asked a few friends, whoin tum asked a few friends, etc. aboutfinding a person who sold antiquemotorcycles.Gordon Barbee, of Huntsville, Alaba-ma, was the person who won our talentsearch contest. Upon calling Gordonand stating my need to find a Four, thefirst question he asked was, “ Whatyear are you looking for?” This was aquestion that I was ill prepared toanswer, for I had absolutely no idea ofsomething even as basic as when Indi-an motorcycles were made. After the initial stammering for words(“One never wants to appear unknow-ledgeable when he is buying some-thing.” Socrates, 428 BC), I men-tioned 1928, for no apparent reason. 1held my breath waiting for him toinform me that in 1928 a four cylinderwas not manufactured. To my surpriseand relief, this was not the case, forGordon knew of such a motorcycleand it was available. So, we agreed tomeet at the Fall Carlisle Flea Market.Upon inspecting the motorcycle, itappeared to my keen, untrained eye tobe complete and at $3,000.00, reason-ably priced compared to a fewCorvette trinkets I had just purchased... And much more! 12433
