Description: Feast your eyes on this weathered but still working HP Vectra VL400 SF, a true low-profile/small-form-factor beast from 1999. A true barn find, being found stored inside a workshop storage desk. It's in desperate need of some retrobrighting (if that's your thing), but in surprisingly good condition otherwise. We've already gone through the trouble of:- cleaning/air-hosing it out- removing the old gunk & putting in some new MX-4 CPU thermal paste- replacing the CR2032 CMOS/clock battery, and- installing an optional mini-PC speaker We've also installed a fresh copy of Windows 98 SE and installed the Feb '04 Security Pack updates, amongst a small handful of useful utils (pdf reader, 7zip, etc). All necessary drivers are installed and working with a clean Device Manager panel - it's basically set up in a perfect state to start playing old DOS/Win9x video games on. Please note that 800MHz is actually a really great CPU speed to use to play certain hard-to-play/speed-sensitive titles such as Grand Theft Auto III/Vice City, but will require a 3D capable video card to be installed. The default installed Intel 82815 video chipset does not support 3D rendering, but there are three PCI slots open that can used instead for any future upgrades. There is also an AGP 4X adapter, but requires removal of the entire 90-degree riser assembly to use. Note that the entire PCI busses 90-degree riser assembly actually pulls right out allowing you easier access to replace PCI cards. Attempting to replace cards without removing this riser assembly isn't recommended (due to a small clamp only accessible while the riser assembly is removed) - refer to sticker inside computer for mechanical demonstration. Supports PS/2 keyboard/mouse as well as USB (USB not available in DOS, only in Win9x mode), but note that it only has two USB ports, both in back. Integrated audio, LAN, and VGA video output. Note that usage with modern digital monitors will need a VGA->HDMI conversion cord or scanline converter device - we recommend using an analog CRT monitor for best results. Lastly comes with standard US black AC power plug. PSU is in US 115V mode (EU/SA customers may need to swipe to 220V mode). CONDITION: All the capacitors looked in good condition, nothing buldging or otherwise sticking out as problematic. Runs nice and quiet, no terribly loud fans or anything jarring. Original CD-ROM works without any issue - a bit noisy but nothing unexpected or troublesome. Original floppy drive of course does not function - no surprise there since floppy drives are notorious for going bad. Installing a GOTEK USB->floppy adapter would be ideal here - a section of the front plate will need to be removed to allow such to fit, which the case supports. Original 10GB Maxtor Ultra ATA133 IDE hard-drive installed, with no weird noises outside of the usual platter spin-up/down sounds. These small capacity IDE hard drives have sometimes turned out to very well built and long lasting, and that certainly is the case here. No bad sectors or other issues encountered during full scandisk. The insides looked in really great condition, so aside from the outside plastic yellowing, a missing drive bay cover, and the 3.5" floppy drive not working this is actually a really great find. Sure to bring somebody a lot of fun playing retro Win9x apps/games in a classy low-profile way. SUITABLE FOR: Great for those in space-constrained conditions looking to get into the retro gaming club or for collectors of vintage PCs. A really great minimal setup to start building a retro machine of your dreams. Already set up and ready to start being put back to use!
