"Enoch Arden" is a long narrative poem by Tennyson, published while he was Poet Laureate of Britian. The title character is a merchant-sailor who leaves his wife and children to return to the sea after he loses his job on land. He is shipwrecked on a deserted island, the other survivors eventually die, and he is left alone. Enoch is lost for over 11 years; after 10 of those years, presuming he is dead, his wife eventually gives up hope and remarries. When Enoch is eventually rescued and returns, he does not reveal himself to his former wife and family, not wanting to spoil their current happiness. He dies heartbroken. The poem's title led to an American legal principle, called the "Enoch Arden doctrine" that allows the law to declare someone dead if they are missing for at least 7 years.
