Description: This amazing book appears to be out of print. It is a gold mine of knowledge about the great composers, how they played and how they taught their own students. It is a tour-de-force with it's over 500 pages of vital information for keyboard players. This book traces keyboard playing from its beginnings to the end of the 19th century. It discusses all the instruments organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and piano, including quotes from letters, diaries, reviews, and method books. There are chapters dedicated to Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, and major sections on such great performers and composers as Frescobaldi and Couperin to Debussy and Rachmaninoff. This book belongs in the library of every keyboard performer and teacher. Dr. Soderlund holds degrees from Stanford University, the University of Southern California and Bethany College. She has been on the faculty of Stanford University and Mills College in Oakland California. She has performed extensively in the US and Europe. The book is in very good condition, but of the 544 pages I found 12 that have some underlining/highlighting. All the rest are clean and pristine. The cover shows minor signs of handling. The binding is excellent.
