AMOS ALONZO STAGG - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/25/1952 - HFSID 251693 AMOS ALONZO STAGG Amos Alonzo Stagg sends a typed letter in 1952 talking about his book Treatise on American Football and how he came up with the diagrams to Alexander M. Weyand who published The Saga Of American Football in 1955. Typed Letter Signed: "A.A. Stagg.", 1p, 8½x11. Stockton, California, 1952 February 25. On his personal, imprinted letterhead to Col. A.M. Weyand, Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y. In full: "In 1893, Stagg and Williams published 'Treatise on American Football,' which was the first book to have diagrams of football plays in it. About fifty of the sixty-nine diagrams were plays which I had created in 1890-1 at the International Y.M.C.A. College at Springfield, Massachusetts. Diagram 54 was entitled, 'Princeton opening wedge from the center of the field.' Princeton was starred and the star below said, 'The wedge formation at the center of the field originated at Princeton.' No. 55 was a diagram of 'Yale modification of the Princeton wedge,' which modification was my conception of having a couple of out-runners line up on either side of center and precede the wedge in order to block the defensive center and one of the guards in order to prevent their crushing the wedge. I was one of the out-runners to do the blocking. Thus you see that, in 1893, H.L. Williams and I gave credit to Princeton for the wedge used in the opening play of the game that period. Later, when I became a member of the Football Rules Committee in 1904, I came in contact with Paul Dashiel who was a member of the Rules Committee from about 1894 to 19022. It was he, I believe, who influenced me to change my original point of view about the Princeton wedge so that when the articles were written for the Saturday Evening Post, I gave credit for the formation to Lehigh. Dashiel had played on Lehigh. I am now inclined to think that I was wrong in making the change and that the credit for the conception belongs to R.M. Hodge of Princeton. Thank you for bringing this to my attention." 4 ink corrections by Stagg. The Saga Of American Football by Alexander M. Weyand was published in 1955. Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) played and coached football for 71 years. He was 98 years old when he retired as a football coach from Stockton Junior College on September 16, 1960. He played at Yale and made the original All-America football team in 1889. Stagg is credited with the use of dummies for tackling practice and introducing (at the University of Chicago) the end-around play, the shift and the man in motion. Stagg was 102 when he died. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "t" of Stagg. Pinhead-size stain at upper blank edge. Fine condition.
