Obverse: Probus was a Roman emperor who reigned from 276 to 282 CE. Known for his military expertise and dedication to restoring stability to the Roman Empire, he came to power during a turbulent period known as the Crisis of the Third Century, which was marked by political instability, economic challenges, and frequent barbarian invasions. Probus focused on defending the empire’s borders and restoring order through a series of successful military campaigns. He defeated invading tribes along the Rhine and Danube frontiers and fought against rival claimants to the throne, securing his position as emperor. A practical and disciplined leader, Probus also undertook significant public works projects, including agricultural improvements and the replanting of vineyards in the western provinces. Despite his achievements, Probus’s reign was cut short in 282 CE when he was killed in a mutiny by his own soldiers, who grew tired of his insistence on using them for labor projects in peacetime. Probus left a legacy as one of the last effective soldier-emperors, respected for his attempts to stabilize and rebuild the empire. Reverse: The Roman eagle (aquila) on coins was a powerful symbol of Roman authority, military power, and imperial divinity. The eagle often appeared on coins to convey the emperor’s connection to Rome’s military might and the favor of the gods. The eagle had been a sacred emblem for the Roman legions since the late Republic, and under the empire, it became a more generalized symbol of imperial strength and unity.
