It is refreshingly a story of simple vivid lives lived in an Anglo-Saxon New England town. These lives adjust themselves with varying success to the exigencies that every life must meet. Sadness is there surely, but beyond sadness, if bitterness can be denied, there lies great happiness. Anne finds this happiness, and those who learn how she found it will be comforted and may well be made happy. If the purpose of the story is to mobilize the courage facing hard circumstances by the discovery of real life values, the purpose has been fulfilled."
