Description: A beautiful example of a small Norwegian tine storage box of quality acanthus tendril carving*. The body of the round box looks to have been largely carved from the same piece of birch wood. This antique Norwegian folk art tine box is in good antique condition in a wonderful warm color with a beautiful patina. There is a small ding in the side and a tiny splotch of paint, visible in the photos. The cover has lost its carved handle and does not quite fit due to warping. I can’t pinpoint the date of the box, or the particular region of Norway, but it was at least pre-1950, though may be a old as the late 1800s and probably came from around Alesund. This small box measures about 4.25 inches in diameter by about 3.75 inches high from the feet, the handles add another 1.5 inches. Please look at all photos as these are part of the description. *The Baroque-style acanthus leaf motif became established on the coast of Norway around 1700. It soon moved inland to farming regions where woodcarvers picked it up. Much of the carving on smaller objects was done on a hobby basis. Small tine boxes like these were designed for storage of valued trinkets and as keepsakes. This one was intended to use as butter storage. In Gudbrandsdal and surrounding regions, acanthus style ornamentation was especially popular. It is called both krullskurd and Dølaskurd "scroll carving".
