Description: A very rare and exceptional gaming box from the 1830 to 1850 period. The rarity being the original hand painted scene to the lid of this sycamore sewing box. If like us you adore Georgian antiques and our canine friends...this box combines both.We have attributed this sewing box to one of the Belgium spa towns. These towns were very popular tourist resorts during the 18th and early 19th century. Tourists flocked to these towns in Belgium to take the health benefits of its natural spa waters. Therefore a good tourist industry existed for souvenir wares. In particular pen work and painted Sycamore and Birch sewing, gaming and work boxes became a speciality of this region. Our example has a superb painting to the lid that depicts a pointer type dog alert and looking to the distance. He is surrounded by rolling countryside on this summer's day.Push the button and lift the lid to reveal the wonderful interior. First of all look inside the lid to see the original pink silk lining. The base of the box contains four rectangular sliding lid boxes. Each sliding lid box has a different botanical painting to the lid. Each has its original turquoise blue lining paper. The first depicts a Honeysuckle with the words '25 Jetons Ivoire' hand written to the inside. The next box depicts a Hydrangea flower, the next box depicts Viola with the hand written script to the interior '28 Jetons Nacre', the final box depicts Anenome or possibly Himilayan poppy with the words '23 Jetons Argent' written to the interior.Size: 8 1/4 inch (21 cm) wide by 2 inch (5 cm) tall by 6 inch (15.5 cm) deepCondition: Good and sound, opens and closes well.
