This is an original hand-colored print - #281 - from the royal octavo first edition of John James Audubon's Birds of America, published 1840-1844. Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1840-44. The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of John James Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring. The credits are in italics, as required. Includes a facsimile of the title page and Audubon's bird biography for the Zenaida Dove. Audubon's first attempt at drawing was from a preserved specimen of a dove, and he tellsus in the bird biography of his inordinate fondness for doves as a youth.
