The lettering and background on the cover reminds me a bit of his artwork for "Ultra Super Modernistic Comics" from Head Comix. Inside, Crumb contributes a terrific ProJunior story, Jay Lynch delivers two Nard n' Pat tales and Snappy Sammy Smoot becomes a serial killer. Another highlight is "Hef's Pad", where Crumb, Lynch and Williamson describe their visit to the Playboy mansion, which is based on a true story. The Bijou series steps it up another notch as Lynch (the editor) relies on four of the smartest guys in the underground for the content of this issue.HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES: There are four printings of this comic book, all by Kitchen Sink and all with 50-cent cover prices. It is believed that approximately 10,000 copies were produced for each printing, but Kennedy's Price Guide only confirms that for the latter three printings, not the first. The 1st printing does not indicate which printing it is, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th indicate their printing order on the inside front cover.It is very difficult to differentiate between the printings without access to the print indicia on the inside front cover. However, the trim and color saturation on the front cover of the 4th printing does seem consistently distinct from the other three. Every Friday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest version just hitting the shelves. With several of my hippy friends grooving, and laughing over Comics, we’d sit around that smoke-filled room, sometimes late into the night. Fast forward, some fifty years later – my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in the back of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds of underground comics that had only been read once, were in beautiful condition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold.
