FLETCHER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 12/12/1968 - HFSID 273764 ALBERT L. FLETCHER. TLS: "+ Albert L Fletcher" as Bishop of Little Rock, 1p, 8½x11. Little Rock, Arkansas, 1968 December 12. On letterhead of the Diocese of Little Rock to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "This is just a word to thank you for your kind letter of December 6th. I do not have a good photograph to send you and hence I hope that my signature at the bottom of this letter will be the autograph which you requested. Sometime a little later on when I have some pictures taken, I will try to think to send you one. Thanking you for the compliments contained in your letter and hoping that you say a prayer occasionally for me and my intentions, I am, with the very best of greetings and good wishes and remembrances at Mass during this Holy Season Yours sincerely in Christ". Albert Lewis Fletcher (1896-1979) was the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Little Rock, the only Roman Catholic diocese in the state. The first native Arkansan elevated to that rank, Fletcher served from 1947 until 1972, when he had to resign upon reaching the age of 75. During his tenure, there was unprecedented growth and upheaval, as the racial integration of Little Rock public schools took place from 1957-1959. Fletcher oversaw the integration of Catholic schools and hospitals during this time, and he later attended the Second Vatican Council (four Fall sessions from 1962-1965). After Fletcher asked for an Auxiliary Bishop in 1969, the Vatican named Lawrence P. Graves, another Arkansas native, to the position (Graves would leave Arkansas to become the Bishop of Alexandria, Louisiana in 1973). Fletcher, who had been ordained as a Priest in 1920, had previously served in a number of positions in Little Rock, and he was known for writings, which included a catechism (1960) and interventions or amendments for the Second Vatican Council, and for suspending Father James E. Drane, a Priest who hoped to overthrow the "myth" of papal infallibility. The suspension was upheld by the Vatican. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
