Written in the 1890’s and documenting the operational level doings of the Fifth corps from the time of the first battle of Bull Run until the end of the Civil War, this hefty tome (coming in at 900 pages) is a fascinating read. I was quite taken by the breadth of what the author covered as well as by how much the American English language has changed in one hundred years. Also fascinating was the tone taken of three of the main controversies that took place around this particular unit, namely: Gen. McClellan, Gen Porter, and Gen Warren. While many know of Gen McClellan’s case and how he was adored by the soldiers, yet was not ultimately deemed successful, the other two cases are not as well known. In both of those situations, the author is quite partisan in his defense of the individuals and devotes many pages to the defense of their actions and even includes much material from their efforts to clear their names and rehabilitate their reputations many years after the war ended. Given how current history books shy away from any appearance of taking sides on any kind of controversy, this was quite different and stood out. The material covered – the operations of the Fifth corps – was done very well at the level of the corps. Clearly the author intended for this to be a summary of that unit’s operations and not be read or understood without additional reference material For much additional detail, he occasionally suggests that individual regimental histories be consulted. Each chapter is organized somewhat along campaign lines and contains descriptions of the main activities of those campaigns as seen through the eyes of the men of the Fifth corps. The book does not really attempt to cover the whole war, nor does it explain much about what other units may have done unless it is an exceptional case: for instance, the battle of the crater around Petersburg is mentioned and described briefly even though the Fifth Corps had no particular involvement. In the summary to each chapter the author mentions the officers in each regiment that were killed or severely wounded and also includes the applicable tables from official records showing the summaries of casualties incurred in each campaign. 2 03 356
