He attended his coronation in 566 and stayed close. When Justin had a mental breakdown in 574, Sophia turned to Tiberius to manage the empire, elevating him to Caesar. When Justin died in 578, Tiberius became emperor, reigning until 582, when he died from poorly prepared or poisoned food. The Mappa, or Mappa Mundi (chart of the World) was any medieval map of holdings of an Empire. In 526 a terrible earthquake destroyed Antioch, and Justinian rebuilt it and named it Theopolis or ‘City of God’. In 538, the Persians sacked the new city but lost it back to the Byzantines who lost it to the Arabs in 637. It was recovered by the Byzantines under Nicephorus II in 969 but was re-conquered by the Seljuk Turks in 1084. Crusaders staged the Siege of Antioch in 1098 and the city became a battleground for the Crusades until the Mongols captured most of Syria in 1260. Bohemund retained Antioch and the County of Tripoli for a while but Antioch (Theopolis) did not survive.
