Description: 254 pages, 9 Illustrations. Measures 5.25 x 6.25" This is a used antique book. For the most accurate description of condition, please study the photos. My Notes: In later blue cloth binding. Original front and rear covers laid down. Front cover has some signs of wear. Laid down paper spine label with some loss, New end sheets. Spine shows spotting and fading. Title page states there are 9 illustrations, all 9 are present. Illustrations by T. Hosemann. Most have his monograph. The book is undated, but the monographs appear to be dated '53' and '63', so the book was likely published in 1863 or later. The plates are nicely colored. It is unclear to me if they are hand colored, or chromolithographs. Complete children's books illustrated by Hosemann are scarce. He was a very famous illustrator, and most of these books were broken apart for the plates. This copy is in good or better condition. Pages show some foxing. Small pencil note on title page. I am including a longer bio of Hosemann from another bookseller, edited for brevity: "...Theodor Hosemann, German graphic artist, painter, draughtsman, illustrator and caricaturist. Along with Adolf Menzel, he is considered the most important lithographer in the early period of this technique in Berlin. ...Theodor Hosemann grew up as the son of a Prussian officer in various places, since 1816 in Düsseldorf. There he coloured lithographs in the lithographic institute "Arnz und Winckelmann" from 1819, completed an apprenticeship there as a draughtsman and lithographer and at the same time attended drawing lessons with Lambert Cornelius at the primary schools. In 1822 he got a permanent position as a draughtsman at the Lithographische Anstalt and at the same time studied at the Kunstakademie, where he was one of the few who took over from Wilhelm Schadow after he took up his post in 1826. In 1828 Winckelmann took Hosemann with him to Berlin; there he was given a permanent position in Winckelmann's newly founded publishing house. Hosemann mainly illustrated children's and youth literature (e.g. fairy tales and fables) and became so famous with them that he soon worked for different publishers and could give up his permanent position at Winckelmann. In addition to humorous drawings for the Bunte Hefte published by George Gropius, he worked with the critical publicist and writer Adolf Glaßbrenner, for whose series "Berlin wie es ist - und trinkt" (Berlin as it is - and drinks), published in 32 issues, he provided the illustrations of the same name. In 1857 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy, in 1860 member of the academy and in 1866 teacher at the drawing school attached to the academy. Among his pupils was Heinrich Zille."
