US route 101 is the last surviving highway from the US system of 1926 that still retains much of its mileage in California. Originally starting in San Diego, the road heads to Los Angeles and then up the coast to San Francisco, and then even further north through Eureka and into Oregon, before entering Washington and curling around the Olympic Peninsula. An original of these, complete with the blue logo of the Automobile Club of Southern California, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. The sign is 16 1/4 by 15 3/4 inches, and weighs four pounds and six ounces. This sign style was the first ever US route marker ever posted in California, between 1928 and 1934. Only the first six years of production got the distinct and ornate blue logo, and maybe only about five or six of the blue-logo style of signs survive to the present day. This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close! US-101 still exists in California, though it has been truncated between San Diego and Los Angeles, being wholly replaced by interstate 5.
