Description: This is the perfect gift for the Dickens fan, collector, or scholar. There is no other published work like this. This is a copy of the very RARE Charles Dickens portfolio of 14 facsimiles of documents spanning Dickens' career. The portfolio, edited by Dickens scholar Ivor Brown, for Jackdaw Publications London, was published in 1970. Jackdaw Publications is a small US-based publishing company that published more than 100 portfolios of primary source facsimiles in the late 1900s. The publishing company covered a wide range of historical and cultural topics like the Columbus and the Age of Discovery, The Battle of Waterloo, Winston Churchill, The Rise of Napoleon, Newton and Gravitation, The American Civil War. Some of these portfolios, like The Assassination of President Kennedy, fetch thousands of dollars at auction. This portfolio was well-taken care of, unfortunately a previous owner allowed water to slightly discolor and warp the exterior folder (see all photos); however the contents, which are the most valuable part of this collection, are all very good condition given their age. I have reviewed at least a dozen of this particular portfolio over the past 30 years, and most exterior folders are rarely in pristine or fine condition. On most, the tape that was used on the sides has fallen off or disintegrated; moreover, some of the facsimiles are either missing or in very poor condition. This set has ALL 14 inserts/facsimiles. The photos will show that some facsimiles have slighty bent corners caused when the top of the folder is folded down. Taken together, these facsimiles transport the reader to the Victorian era and one of literature's greatest writers, Charles Dickens. Dickens had a profound impact on Victorian England, both as a social critic and as a literary figure. Through works like Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, Dickens exposed the harsh realities of poverty, child labor, and social inequality, sparking public debate and reform. His vivid characters and compelling narratives helped raise awareness about the plight of the poor and the injustices embedded in the social system, influencing public opinion and contributing to legislative changes, such as improvements in child welfare and labor laws. Dickens' ability to blend entertainment with social commentary made him a key voice in shaping the moral consciousness of Victorian society. Please ensure that you are completely satisfied with the pictures - which are part of the description - as well as my narrative description before you purchase, since I do not accept returns or give refunds.
