Clare is more commonly known as a printmaker, but also created numerous illustrations, bookplates, engravings, mosaics and stained glass windows. She was educated at the Brighton College of Art and went on to attend the Slade School of Fine Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She engraved under Noel Rooke, creating her first woodblocks in the 1920’s. Throughout the 203 and 30’s Clare taught, exhibited and conducted several lecture tours of the United States. During World War II she emigrated to America, and in 1945 became an American Citizen. Clares works are sought after by collectors and examples are held at the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.
