Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1963. 1st edition. With “First Edition” printed on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there was a book club edition of WAY STATION that was published in a hardcover format that was similar to the 1st edition. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Clifford D. Simak was born in 1904 and died in 1988. He was honored by winning three Hugo Awards, one Nebula Award, being named the third Science Fiction Writers of America Grand Master, and is one of three inaugural winners of the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement. Simak was born in Wisconsin and spent most of his life in Wisconsin and in Minnesota. He became interested in science fiction after reading the works of H.G. Wells. He was also associated with the Minneapolis Star and Tribune for much of his adult life. He was well liked by many of his science fiction colleagues, especially Isaac Asimov. Simak was the author of such great and famous books as COSMIC ENGINEERS (a Gnome Press book), THE CREATOR, CITY (winner of the International Fantasy Award), RING AROUND THE SUN, TIME IS THE SIMPLEST THING, WAY STATION (a Hugo Award winner; offered here), THEY WALKED LIKE MEN, WHY CALL THEM BACK FROM HEAVEN?, THE WEREWOLF PRINCIPLE, THE GOBLIN RESERVATION, OUT OF THEIR MINDS, DESTINY DOLL, A CHOICE OF GODS, CEMETERY WORLD, OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN, A HERITAGE OF STARS, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE TALISMAN, THE VISITORS, PROJECT POPE, SPECIAL DELIVERANCE, HIGHWAY TO ETERNITY, and a number of others. WAY STATION is absolutely one of the scarcest and most valuable of all of the Hugo Award winning novels in their first edition state, rivaling the scarcity of such famous Hugo Award winners as DUNE, STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS, RINGWORLD, DOUBLE STAR, and A CASE OF CONSCIENCE. From the dust jacket: “ . . . WAY STATION . . . Clifford D. Simak . . . Enoch Wallace led a solitary life. He left his house only to collect his mail or take an occasional walk; his two Earthly acquaintances were the postman and a beautiful deaf-mute girl who could mend the broken wing of a butterfly. If his neighbors in the hills of Wisconsin thought it strange that he never seemed to grow older, they never spoke of it. He was, in fact, the keeper of Way Station 18327 . . . When Wallace Agreed to manage the Way Station, he had been unaware of the greater role for which he was being considered -- Earth’s sole representative to the Inter-Galactic Council. For more than a century he carried out his duties flawlessly, having become so accustomed to the bizarre and wonderful creatures that passed through his materializer he saw nothing unusual in a plasm that communicated by changing its shape or a beetle that counted by clicking its mandibles. He passed many evenings listening to the fascinating tales of these travelers from the farthest reaches of space . . . Then the outside world threatened to destroy the Way Station, and with it, man’s last hope of avoiding cataclysmic self-annihilation. The CIA suddenly became interested in a Civil War veteran who looked younger than thirty, an alien corpse in his family cemetery, and a house whose windows could not be broken with an axe . . . WAY STATION is top-grade science fiction by one of the foremost authors in the field . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . CLIFFORD D. SIMAK is the Winner of the International Fantasy Award for his brilliantly prophetic novel CITY. Mr. Simak has more than 120 published stories to his credit. He is the author of RING AROUND THE SUN, TIME IS THE SIMPLEST THING, and most recently, THEY WALKED LIKE MEN. He has been a journalist ever since he left college, and for the past fourteen years has been News Editor of the Minneapolis Star. Born in Wisconsin, Mr. Simak lives with his wife and two children in Excelsior, Minnesota . . . “ Some of the awards and award nominations that Clifford Simak has been honored with: 1952: CITY. Simak was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible science fiction authors of all time. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A VERY GOOD+ book in a VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its greenish-brown full-cloth binding. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. There is some relatively minor shelf wear at the lower edges of the cloth of the book; basically unobtrusive. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $3.50. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. There is a minimal amount of archival restoration to the dust jacket (involving no tape whatsoever) that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist, mainly at the head and heel of the spine panel of the jacket. There is little to no evidence of the restoration when viewing the dust jacket from the outside. The famous dust jacket artwork is by Ronald Fratell. There is a wonderful contemporary photograph of Clifford D. Simak on the rear panel of the dust jacket. At the time of this listing, this is the only 1st edition copy of WAY STATION currently being offered for sale on EBAY. WAY STATION is certainly a difficult one to find if you're trying to collect all of the Hugo winners in their 1st edition states. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF CLIFFORD D. SIMAK 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you.
