Description: Autographed and inscribed postcard photograph of the Russian, later American conductor, December 15, 1915. Cooper (1877-1960) started off as a concert violinist, later became a Nikisch conducting pupil. Cooper led the orchestra for the 1899 Chaliapin-Sobinov important Russian tour which enhanced his reputation. He later was Music Director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic from 1920-1923 and the Latvian National Opera from 1925-1928. From 1944-1950 he was a staff conductor with the Metropolitan Opera. The conductor also led performances of Diaghilev's Russian opera season tours in Paris and London. The conductor led several World Premieres including Rimsky's opera, "Coq D'Or" at the Zimin Private Opera in 1909 and Gliere's 3rd Symphony. In Moscow he conducted the local Premiere of Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto with the composer at the piano as well as the Moscow Premiere of Scriabin's "Poeme of Extacy". In New York at the Metropolitan Opera he conducted the American Premieres of "Kovanschina", "Le Coq D'Or" and "Peter Grimes”.
