Description: * DescriptionThis is a coupling of two masterpieces by Schubert by Richter, a towering master in the history of 20th century piano performance. The “Wanderer Fantasy” is a favorite of Richter, who began playing it in 1938 during his early years as a pianist, and played it 58 times during his lifetime. This 1963 recording focuses on the energetic forward motion of the work, especially the fugal coda in the fourth movement, which conveys the power of Richter's pianism. The sorrowful sentiments that submerge in the second movement, which uses the melody from the song “The Wanderer,” are also uniquely profound. Meanwhile, Schubert's piano quintet “Mas” was recorded at the Schubertiade Festival in Austria in June 1980, 17 years after the “Wanderer Fantasy”.The quartet was founded in 1944 by Georg Hertnagel, a leading German double bassist, and three members of the Borodin Quartet, one of the most famous quartets of the 20th century in the Soviet Union, who would also perform with Richter many times after this period.Unlike the usual piano quintet, this work has a unique composition with a double bass and piano instead of two violins, and the contrast between the piano and string parts is remarkable. In the famous fourth movement, Variations on a theme from the song “Masu,” each variation is beautifully polished, and the character of each is clearly defined.Since Richter played this work only seven times in his lifetime, it is fortunate that the last performance has been preserved for posterity in a vivid recording.
