John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith, who lived from 1908 – 2006, was a Canadian/American economist, public official, and diplomat, and a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism. His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 2000s, during which time Galbraith fulfilled the role of public intellectual. As an economist, he leaned toward Post-Keynesian economics. Galbraith was a long-time HARVARD faculty member and stayed with Harvard University for half a century as a professor of economics. He was a prolific author and wrote four dozen books, and published more than a thousand articles and essays on various subjects. Among his most famous works was "The Affluent Society" in 1958. Galbraith was active in Democratic Party politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Baines Johnson. He served as U.S. Ambassador to India under the Kennedy administration. His political activism, literary output and outspokenness made him, arguably, "the best-known economist in the world" during his lifetime. "Affluent Society" sought to clearly outline the manner in which the post-World War II United States was becoming wealthy in the private sector but remained poor in the public sector, lacking social and physical infrastructure, and perpetuating income disparity. Galbraith concluded: "To furnish a barren room is one thing. To continue to crowd in furniture until the foundation buckles is quite another. To have failed to solve the problem of producing goods would have been to continue man in his older and most grievous misfortune. . ." The book sparked much controversy and public discussion. It is widely remembered for Galbraith's popularizing the term "conventional wisdom." 384 pages, including an Index. I combine shipping in U.S.
