Description: No. 8 Cast Iron 3 Legged Bean Pot Kettle Caldron 10-1/2" Diameter, 8-1/4" high w/out Handle This is an antique 3 legged Bean Pot made between 1850 and 1870 with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. It has a banded rim, corn horn shaped ears, a large bottom gate, and a bail wire handle. Taken with the short (3/4") rounded legs, this places it in the mid 1800's time period. The bottom has a thick gate mark and a raised number "8". There are sand mold marks, which is common on these very old kettles. In addition, one of the cow horn ears is set at an angle to the rim (see photo). The ears on these old kettles were applied after the main casting was complete; I've never seen one like this before and believe it to be a foundry error which was sold anyway. Highly unusual. It has been restored by me--thoroughly returned to raw cast iron, seasoned properly at a high temperature, and is ready to use. This is a time-consuming process. No harsh methods were used on this oven. There may be some unevenness in how the seasoning took. The cooking surface inside and the bail wire have heavy pitting on the bottom. There is a bit of distortion in the bail wire. See high resolution pictures for more and use the magnify feature. Cast iron can be damaged if dropped or mishandled. I pack all cast iron items extremely well, using bubble wrap and additional packing materials.
