Description: The vibrant palettes and round-faced children of Graciela Rodo Boulanger are often copied, but never duplicated. Her work embodies the joy and elation of childhood, and evokes a fanciful spirit that seems to jump off the canvas. Although much of Boulanger's work portrays children playing sports or music, or exploring the vividly colored trees and landscapes created for them, "Magic Flute” is an ode to two of Boulanger’s lifelong passions, Art and Music. Growing up in La Paz, she was equally devoted to both music and painting. It wasn’t until age 25 that Boulanger abandoned her piano for a paintbrush and committed wholeheartedly to life as a fine artist. In 1986, the Metropolitan Opera of New York commissioned Boulanger to create a poster as well as a limited edition original lithography commemorating Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” to promote their 1987-88 season, and the works she created are some of the most coveted pieces to date. She was also honored with a solo exhibition at the gallery at Lincoln Center featuring works on paper, illustrating some of the most beloved operas of the 19th century. The ashen color palette in the original lithograph of "Magic Flute" is the antithesis of what she is so well-known for, but this work full encapsulates the mood of one of the world’s most celebrated operas. While remaining true to her form and colorful imagination, “Magic Flute” is a true testament to the talent of this great artist. The original etchings and lithographs offered in our collection were created by the artist and published by Lublin Graphics over a period of 25 year.
