Description: Grainger Hand-Reticulated Floral Ewer Vase Aesthetic Royal China Works Worcester George Grainger & Co (England, c. 1801-1902) Floral Reticulated Ewer Form Vase, c. 1870-1889 porcelain 7 7/8” high x 4 ½” diameter Description: An Aesthetic decorative ewer vase with a ribbed body and floral sprays made by George Grainger & Co, just prior to it’s being taken over by Royal Worcester. The neck, spout, and alternating bands on the body are fully reticulated, a process that involved filing and detailing entirely by hand. Markings: George Grainger & Co, Royal China Works, Worcester, Established 1801, black backstamp; 1/1956 Condition: Antique, Very Good For Accuracy: there are few extremely tight cracks to the reticulation, these are tight and do not fluoresce under a black-light – they are possibly from before the firing and noticed only under close inspection. The gilt, colours and reticulation are excellent. See photographs. Biography: “George Grainger (& Co.), Worcester, Hereford and Worcester, UK. These works were originally established in 1801 by Thomas Grainger, who worked with different partners (Grainger & Wood, Grainger & Lee) until his death in 1839, when the business was carried on by his son George Grainger. Up to 1848 only porcelain was made, but after this date hard-wearing “Semi-Porcelain” was invented and produced commercially at the works. Parian vases, figures and ornaments were also made. In 1889 the Grainger company was taken over by the Worcester Royal Porcelain Co. Ltd., and production continued until 1902. The mark above was used c. 1870-89. The mark below was used 1889-1902; the letter that appears under the word “England” represents the year of production: A (1891)-L(1902).” – Millers, Pottery & Porcelain Marks.
