Description: Grateful Dead : New Years Eve - The Closing of Winterland - December 31, 1978 : New Year's Eve 1978 - 1978 !!! : December 31, 1978 ( 12/31/1978 ) - Winterland Arena - San Francisco, California ( CA ) : 4 CD : 2003 (1978/2003) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. ( GDP ) - GDCD 78055 : Quintessential ! Grateful Dead " New Years Eve " Show ! ... '78 - '79 !! ... for the " Closing Of Winterland " !!! The Grateful Dead ' Closing ' the Legendary ! Winterland Arena in San Francisco, California on New Years Eve 1978 - 1979 !!! ... Arguably, the Most ! Legendary ! G.D. New Years Eve Show - of All-Time !!!!! Dead Fans !!! Wow ... As we all well know ? You could almost write a Novel ! about this Legendary !! night of live Grateful Dead, for really ? ... all obvious reasons. True-change, as the sands slipped through the Hour Glass on this Amazing ! night of music, in San Francisco - at the Winterland Arena! I mean after all, Bill Graham himself even flew through the air inside the Winterland - right above the Crowd, on a custom-spaceship that for some strange reason ? ... looked like a joint ! Ha !!! Completely-classic ... and then some. Well, the truly emotional-part about this performance is that it marked the Grateful Dead wishing a musical farewell to the Winterland Arena which they had graced with consistency dating back to 1966 !?! But the neat part about this show is that Bill Graham himself negotiated Live Radio & T.V. Broadcasts of this Wonderful ! performance in the Bay Area, so the show was broadcast on KSAN ( Radio ) & also ( Very Thankfully ) on KQED Public Television. Another thing that was so-special in the constant evolution of the Grateful Dead was the fact that this night in a lot of ways appeared to be the " Happy / Celebration " portion of the inevitable farewell to both Keith & Donna Godchaux. They were no longer in the band following the February '79 Oakland shows, and by the Spring Tour ( 4/22/79 ) - Brent Mydland had joined the Band following his successful roles in both ' Silver ' and ' Bobby & The Midnites '. This was indeed an ' ending ' of a Wonderful Era ! for the Band & the Fans, and on this night they celebrate like there-is-no-tomorrow. But actually, there was " also " a ' Tomorrow ' during this Show because B.G.P. served " Breakfast at Dawn ! " for the Deadheads !! Rumor has it that Folks were leaving the Winterland right around 9-ish or 10-ish in the Morning ! - so that marks a Grate ! Night all in itself. And in the Recorded Music ! in this 4-CD Set more-than demonstrates - my goodness, were they " On !!! ". Everyone pushing in live comfort zones, with musical synergies, peaks, and climaxes all over these Three + ( III ! ) Sets of Live-Dead !!! I sure wish I was there ... but, this Amazingly ! digitally-remastered 4-CD Set almost makes me feel like I was !! Truly-Amazing ! Live 1978 into 1979 Grateful Dead !!! ... ' Auld Lang Syne ' !!!!
