Description: Pergamon, Mysia | AE18 Reference: SNG BN Paris 1875 Date: 200-133 BCE Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right Reverse: ΑΘΗΝΑΣ ΝΙΚΗΦΟΡΟΥ, Tropaion of conquered foe's armor between Mint: Pergamon, Mysia Size: 18.3 mm Weight: 9.66 grams Armor of the Conquered. A very fine bronze coin issued by the Successor kingdom of Pergamon. The trophy of armor on the reverse bears a distinctly Macedonian style and likely represents armor of Seleucid soldiers. While initially a vassal of the Seleucid Empire, the Kingdom of Pergamon eventually became an independent entity who was a perpetual thorn in the side of the Seleucids for much of the second and third centuries BCE. As a final middle finger to the Seleucids, the last Attalid king, Attalus III bequeathed his entire kingdom to the Roman Republic, who formally annexed the kingdom in 129 BCE.
