Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was a Norwegian playwright, poet, and theater director. He is known as the "father of realism" and is considered one of the most important Western playwrights. His plays include Peer Gynt (1867), A Doll's House (1879), and Ghosts (1881). Ibsen was born into a merchant family in Skien, Norway, and spent 27 years living in Italy and Germany. His plays are often set in Norway, but he rarely visited his home country during his most productive years. Ibsen's plays exposed social issues and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie, which made him unpopular with the public. A Doll's House is a melodrama about family secrets and the realities of life for a married woman in a male-dominated society. Ibsen suffered a stroke in 1900 that ended his writing career. He died in 1906 and was honored with a large state-funded funeral procession.
