Description: Breuer participated in the D-Day invasion as a mortar platoon sergeant, aged 20. He later became a newspaper publisher and wrote many books about World War II. The ones that I have read, like “Hitler’s Fortress Cherbourg,” are brisk, well written and focused on action and historical drama. This work reads more like a novel than some of the more scholarly works about World War II, like James Holland’s “Normandy ‘44” and Peter Caddick-Adams “Sand and Steel.” It also provides a wealth of detail about the strategy, operations and tactics used to cut off German forces on the Cotentin Peninsula and then capture strongly defended Cherbourg, which had been France’s second busiest port. The landings on Utah beach, along with the parachute drops by the 82d and 101st Airborne farther inland, were intended to secure the eastern side of the Cotentin peninsula so that the American armies could quickly cut the peninsula and seize Cherbourg. The port could then be used to supply the Allied armies fighting in France, which at the time were being supplied across the Normandy beaches rather than through port facilities. Very minor shelf wear. Cover bright and clean. Book itself like new looks unread. Unmarked.
