Description: 1908 dated Uncanceled 5,000,000 Capitalization 20 Denomination 5% Bond printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited, London Wall, London, E.C. The Qing dynasty (1644"1912) was the final imperial dynasty in China. Founded by the Manchus, it was the second conquest dynasty to rule the entirety of China proper, roughly doubling the territory controlled by the Ming. The Manchus, formerly known as Jurchens, lived in the northeastern part of the Ming territory outside the Great Wall. They posed a significant threat to the late Ming dynasty after Nurhaci united all Jurchen tribes and his son, Hong Taiji, declared the establishment of the Qing dynasty in 1636. The Qing dynasty established the Eight Banners system, which formed the basis for the Qing military conquest. In 1644, Li Zicheng's peasant rebellion captured Beijing, leading to the suicide of the Chongzhen Emperor, the final Ming emperor. The Manchus formed an alliance with the Ming general Wu Sangui to seize Beijing, which then became the capital of the Qing dynasty. They subsequently subdued the remnants of the Ming dynasty in the south. The years of Manchu conquest resulted in a significant loss of life and a drastic reduction in the economic scale of China. Overall, the Qing conquest of the Ming (1618"1683) cost as many as 25 million lives. The early Manchu emperors combined traditions of Central Asian rule with Confucian norms of traditional Chinese government and were considered a Chinese dynasty.
