The visitor approaching from Monreale, ascends to the summit of the mountain-edge,through a denuded, arid, and unfruitful country, and, when the highest pinnacle is reached, suddenly beholds the Convent of San Martino in the mountain-girt hollow below, as beautifully calm as our own Beddgelart, as solemnly secluded as theTadmor in the desert. The vast conventual edifice of San Martino consists of an ancient and a modern part: the former including dormitories and cells, the latter the apartments of cere- mony. The: arcade is all of white marble, polished, and exquisitely worked with the chisel. From the plateau in front, where the air is refreshed by the constant playing of a fountain, the grand hall is entered through a lofty enriched doorway: here it is required that walking-sticks, parasols, swords, and every species of manual burden, shall be deposited.
