Description: IXL GEO. WOLSTENHOLM Gentleman's Pocketknife, Very Vin, Real Pearl: This knife is the kind that cutlers used to make for and after expositions, selling them as commemoratives from the show. I have no proof that this was a "show knife" but the combination of blade styles puzzles me. They do not serve a camping-style; it's too big and heavy to be a gentleman's knife, and those seldom had scissors; the two small blades could have been a whittler's detail blades; the "whittler" blade would be much more robust than this entire knife (and a whittler blade would require riding on double springs); the manicure-blade is way too long for a gent's knife; and the entire frame is much too light to support the use of a corkscrew. So why do I own this knife? For the pearl handles. Pearl was always too expensive for a "factory" knife. It was used for custom made knives, for limited-edition knives or for presentation knives. Its age is demonstrated by the patina on the blades, scarcity of pearl handled knives (pearl has always been expensive, and subject to conservation and hoarding), and this corkscrew style is made by twisting a thin (hot) billet of steel, rather than a steel wire as used since who knows when. The knife is obviously classy but it has lived a hard life: the owner mis-understood the value and purpose of this knife and used it as one would use a Buck knife, resulting in the broken blades and pearls. Shameful. So, who wants this piece of undetermined history? This English jewel is most interesting to a collector of Sheffield cutlers, Wostenholm collectors, military interests (this is the kind that a WW I officer or airman would have slobbered over), a collector of Elizabethan trivia, or a collector of pearl accesories. It's pretty on the outside and has an aged patina. Buy it only if you love it. Mailing only to USA-48. Postage is usually between $5.00 and $6.26. Buyer pays $4.00, I will pay the rest. Please buy another knife and save postage. I am liquidating my entire collection; please keep me in your favorite sellers, watching for Old Bryan's Old Knives or the seller name below.
