In 1955, he appeared in the literary world by publishing short stories in modern literature, and began his activities in earnest by publishing short stories such as Jeondo and the Age of Unbelief in 1957 and a feature drift map in 1959.Later in 1962, he drew attention from the literary world by writing works criticizing the pain of war and the absurdities of the times, including the daughters of Kim Yak-guk, the mayor, Jeonjang (1964), and Pasi (1965).In particular, the epic novel Land, completed in five parts for 26 years from 1969 to 1994, is regarded as a monumental work in Korean literature history that deals deeply with the Korean tradition and history by showing the hardships and fate of various classes in the curve of Korean modern and contemporary history.He won the Modern Literature Rookie Award (1957), the Korean Female Literature Award (1965), the Woltan Literature Award (1972), and the Gabriela Mistral Memorial Medal (1996), was selected as an artist (literature) who shone in the 20th century (1999), and the Gold Crown Order (2008).
