The 4th Crusade was supposed to attack the Muslim-held city of Jerusalem in the Holy Land. However, the "holy" soldiers got a bit distracted and instead sacked the wealthy, Christian city of Constantinople. This created the short-lived Latin Empire of Constantinople. The Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos reclaimed Constantinople in 1261 CE, but some rump Latin states continued to exist in Greece for some time.
