Description: Winner receives a signed & dated enamel spray paint on paper painting by well listed American artist David Roland Smith (1906-1965). The painting is signed & dated 1963 in the lower right corner, seen magnified in picture 5. The painting retains its original gallery frame. The piece comes with impeccable provenance from the collection of Arthur Brandt, New York, NY. The painting is in exquisite overall condition with no rips, tears, repairs, staining, foxing, toning, creasing, or in-painting. The original Italian gold gilt gallery frame is in excellent overall condition with no cracks, repairs, or losses, although there is minor gold gilt rubbing throughout, as expected with age. This painting is an absolute gem and can be hanged as-is. The frame measures roughly 19" x 26", with the image measuring roughly 14" x 23". Please note the pictures may not be as clear as we'd like due to the settings on the camera to reduce the glare. Below is some information about the artist whose sculptures have auction results to $23,816,000, and similar spray paint pieces to the one offered here as high as $86,500. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing. David Smith was born in 1906 in Decatur, Indiana. After briefly attending college at Ohio University, the University of Notre Dame, and George Washington University, he moved to New York in 1926, where he studied painting full time at the Art Students League. During the 1930s he began to focus on sculpture, creating welded constructions by using found objects and forged metal. Smith moved permanently to Bolton Landing, in upstate New York, in 1940. In 1957, Smith first adopted commercially available enamel paint, spraying directly from the aerosol can onto paper and canvas to create drawings and large-scale paintings that use found objects and invented forms as stencils. In September, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, presented a major retrospective survey of his sculptures, drawings, and paintings from 1932 to 1957. Smith died in a car accident near Bennington, Vermont, in 1965. Major exhibitions of his sculptures, paintings and drawings have been presented worldwide since the 1950s, including recent retrospectives at the Sezon Museum of Art, Tokyo (1994); MNCA, Reina Sofía, Madrid (1996); and Storm King Art Center, New York (1997–99). A centennial retrospective organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2006) traveled to the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and Tate Modern, London (2006–07).
