Description: This large, carved and painted wood sculpture of a whale floating above a driftwood base is the work of Jeff Barrett who is sometimes called the "Mad Maine Folk Artist." The 42" long whale has white nail teeth, a yellow glass eye, and fin and tail pieces of painted metal. It hovers above a large piece of driftwood, able to swivel slightly, as shown in my video. The whale can also be displayed without the rod and driftwood base, using the wire on the reverse to hang it. Jeff Barrett of Monroe, Maine describes himself as an excellent scavenger, creating his eco-friendly sculptures from the wood of old barns and sheds, antique molding, hand forged metal, old furniture and miscellaneous odds and ends. “It’s nice to keep these things out of the landfill and fun to figure out where I can incorporate them in a piece,” he said. “New wood and metal doesn’t have the personality that the old pieces have.” This large sperm whale sculpture is a fine example of his work, inspired by Maine's history and its old tradition of folk art. The piece is in excellent condition. Measures: 42" wide x 22" high Driftwood Base measures approximately 29" long x 21" wide. Weighs: 13 lbs. 2 oz.
