Description: Mallory, Irvine and Everest : The Last Step but One by Robert H Edwards (2024, H Click image to enlarge Description In the early morning of 8 June 1924, the English mountaineers storage Mallory and Andrew Irvine set off from their high camp on the North Face of Mount Everest. No-one saw them depart. Their objective: the summit - at 29,002 feet, the highest point in the world. At 12:50 pm that day, their colleague Noel Odell was searching for fossils, far below them on the face of the mountain. Through a brief clearing of the clouds, he saw them, or thought he saw them. Later, he would say that they had been within a few hundred feet of the summit. The clouds closed in. Mallory and Irvine were never seen alive again. Seventy-five years later, American climbers found Mallory's body, far from the summit. The discovery shed little light on where he had been, and how and when he had died. Irvine's body has never been found. For a century it has remained a mystery as to whether, twenty-nine years before Hillary and Tenzing, Mallory and Irvine had stood at the roof of the world.
