NGC F Antoninianus of Philip I the Arab AD244-249 NGC Ancients Double Denarius

Description: NGC F Antoninianus of Philip I the Arab AD244-249 NGC Ancients Double DenariusPhilip the Arab served as the Roman emperor from 244 to 249, hailing from Aurantis in Arabia, a city now located in modern-day Syria. Rising to power after the demise of Gordian III in February 244, Philip, previously the Praetorian prefect, assumed control. His reign witnessed the grand celebration of Rome's millennium. However, his rule came to an abrupt end in September 249 when he was betrayed and killed during the Battle of Verona, orchestrated by his successor Gaius Messius Quintus Decius. Notably, Philip the Arab is often recalled as one of the rare 3rd-century Roman emperors who displayed sympathy towards Christians, even though the nature of his relationship with Christianity remains obscure and contentious.
