A single volume containing 284 pages of typescript extracts from the minutes of the meetings of the PRR Insurance Committee, dated 27 November 1878 – 22 December 1902. [Probably compiled circa 1910-30]. Large quarto (12 ½ x 10 inches). 248 typescript pages, with occasional manuscript corrections or additions. Original reversed calf, labels to upper cover and spine, marbled paper endpapers (extremities damaged). A fascinating and wide-ranging series of extracts. An almost random sampling: Nov. 26, 1878 PRR Subcommittee on Insurance reports that PRR should also self-insure non-hazardous properties and goods in transit. (MB) Nov. 27, 1878 PRR Board approves creation of Insurance Bureau, reporting to Board, effective Jan. 1, 1879 Dec. 10, 1878 PRR Subcommittee on Insurance makes second report on creating a Standing Committee on Insurance and an Insurance Bureau. (MB) Jan. 22, 1879 PRR Board authorizes creation of a Standing Committee on Insurance and an Insurance Dept. (not Bureau as earlier); orders trustees of insurance fund established in Dec. 1876 to turn over funds to new Insurance Committee. (MB) Feb. 12, 1879 PRR Board grants Altoona Library Association $500 plus a room in the shops; appoints W.W. Curtin Clerk of the Insurance Dept. Feb. 26, 1879 Thomas T. Firth relieved as head of Insurance Fund; made registrar of Consolidated Mortgage bonds. (Watkins) Apr. 1, 1881 Thomas T. Firth resigns as Treasurer of the Insurance Fund and Secretary & Treasurer of the sinking fund of the Consolidated Mortgage because of health. (MB, RRGaz) Oct. 1, 1882 Hugh B. Ely (1838-1907) named Secretary of the Insurance Dept. as new department head, replacing W.W. Curtin, Clerk of the Insurance Dept., resigned. (MB) Dec 22, 1882 report of the Committee who toured and inspected the Piers and Buildings in New York Harbor Apr 9, 1886 report of a disastrous fire, Camden, N.J. Sep. 22, 1886 PRR Insurance Dept. enlarged to cover marine risks. (MB) Sep 1, 1887 complimentary report submitted by Hugh B. Ely Sept 4, 1891 report that Hugh B. Ely named Insurance Agent of the Northern Central Railway. (AR) Apr 7, 1893 report of some of the changes during re-organization, including Hugh B. Ely named to new position of Superintendent of Insurance Dept. (RRGaz). Nov 17, 1893 report of claim for cotton bales ‘damagd by fire’ – owner had outside insurance, Ely does not want to pay. Apr 7, 1899 resolution reported: PRR extends Insurance Fund to cover personal injuries except those to employees. Jan. 8, 1900 Value of PRR’s Insurance Fund is $4,345, 511.85 million. (MB)
